The Homefront: Are We on Track to Being the Next Chinese Surveillance State?
The US is on the Verge of Becoming a Chinese Surveillance State
The events of 9/11 ushered in a new age of surveillance here in the United States. The Patriot Act gave the government broad powers to spy on its citizens, and that power has been expanded exponentially in the years since then. Cameras are now ubiquitous in public places, our emails and phone calls are being monitored, and our internet activity is being tracked. Is this level of surveillance necessary to keep us safe? Or are we on track to becoming the next Chinese surveillance state?

There is no question that the government has a responsibility to keep its citizens safe. But at what cost? The level of surveillance we are currently experiencing is unprecedented in American history, and it is happening without any real debate or discussion. Are we willing to trade our privacy for security? Or are we going to stand up and say enough is enough?
It’s time for us to have a serious conversation about the role of surveillance in our society. We need to ask ourselves if we’re really happy with the direction we’re heading, and if not, what can be done to change it. Let’s start by demanding more transparency from our government and insisting on greater oversight of our spy agencies. We need to make sure that they are acting in our best interests and not simply eroding our civil liberties in the name of security.
We must also remember that the threat of terrorism is not the only danger we face. There are many other threats to our security, both foreign and domestic, that need to be addressed. We can’t let ourselves be lulled into a false sense of safety by the government’s assurances that everything is under control. We need to remain vigilant and ask the tough questions, because our freedom is at stake.
We have a worldwide mainstream media, coupled with big tech and the government censoring news and opinions that don’t fit the narrative. We see this everywhere from authoritarian countries to the US.
Twitter and Facebook have been purging people that don’t agree with the mainstream media’s narrative of what is happening. There are reports of a memo that came out in which a Google engineer said that the company is working on algorithms to prevent “the next Donald Trump” from being elected.
The fact that we see this happening to an even greater extent in other countries doesn’t make it any better, but it does remind us that we need to be careful about giving up our liberties. We need to make sure that we are not blindly following the government’s lead and sacrificing our freedom without knowing what we’re getting in return.
While we are not yet to the level of China’s AI credit system, we are nevertheless not far removed from a social credit system that is gradually becoming a danger to democratic ideal of freedom of speech that has been the cornerstone of our society.
While we have not yet implemented a complete human intelligence gathering system, we are closer than we were with neighbor snitch policies being pushed by multi-government agencies.
Are we on track to becoming the next Chinese surveillance state? The answer is not clear, but we need to be vigilant and make sure that we don’t lose our freedoms without knowing what we’re getting in return. Let’s start by demanding more transparency from our government and insisting on greater oversight of our spy agencies.
In conclusion, we must be careful about where we are going with all of this, because if we’re not careful, we may find ourselves living in a surveillance state that is antithetical to everything we hold dear.
